How do Leaders and squads work in Brigandine Abyss?

Every Brigandine Abyss characters discussion starts with squad structure. Official system copy is consistent: a Leader (Rune Knight) commands a monster squad of up to five units. The Leader's formation template sets deploy positions; monsters bring race skills, affinities, and Rally traits when absorbed mid-fight.

On the world map, Leaders are also your economic workers. Unused Leaders quest, explore, or garrison while others invade during the Attack Phase. Story protagonists are Leaders in gameplay — Largo still captures dragons and Garnet still fields mercenary monsters — but cutscenes add plot skills and event battles that generic Mission Leaders do not share.

Combat priority is universal: defeat the enemy Leader and their squad retreats. That is true whether you fight a named protagonist or a generic Mission lord. Hex pathing, height, and affinity details live on combat; Rally absorb rules on rally.

Command Points and promotions

Each Leader has a Command Point (Rune) budget. Monsters cost points to deploy; Class Change can raise that cost — reviews flag this as the hidden squad-size limiter. Protagonists are not exempt from budgeting: a promoted dragon eating your cap hurts Garnet the same as a minor lord.

Story vs generic Leaders

Story Mode protagonists have unique narrative arcs and, per official copy, distinctive Leader skills tied to their campaign. Mission Mode may field the same nation banner with a different objective and bench Leaders from that faction's roster. Do not assume every named face is playable in every mode until you see them on the recruit list.

Who are the six Story protagonists?

NIS America's Story / World pages lock the six campaign leads below. Each row is a full Story campaign on story mode and a selectable Brigandine Abyss mission mode nation on mission mode with a separate win condition.

Shared war

All six routes oppose Neo Abyssloa and its general Chaossolus on Meltitea — the empire that revived 200 years after the Brigandine armor last ended a continental war. Protagonists do not share a single party; you play one nation per save. Cross-nation lore overlaps on the world map and in Mission entries for sub-factions like Elgannacht (Gran Dragnica) or Ebony Fang (Scarlet Will).

What should I know about Largo and Garnet?

Western hands-on previews often recommend Garnet or Largo as first campaigns — mercenary clarity and dragon fantasy without Purifanoe's hidden-village pacing. Both are Leaders in the tactical layer as well as in story cutscenes.

Largo — Gran Dragnica

Largo is a young Dragon Tamer in the Dragonhowl Greatlands. Gran Dragnica is less a centralized kingdom than a mutual-aid network of tamers and dragons in harsh wasteland. Official copy: Neo Abyssloa captured and brainwashed dragons; Largo's Story arc chases rescuing them and imagining coexistence between humans and dragons.

Expect flying and dragon-type monsters in his squads. Sub-faction ties include Elgannacht and Arcus Air Caravan on the broader map. Monster and Rally planning: monsters.

Garnet — Scarlet Will

Garnet leads Scarlet Will, a justice-minded mercenary company roaming southwest grasslands alongside Unicorns. After her father's death at the empire's hands (opening Story beat in previews), she inherits command and keeps fighting for civilians.

Themes: mercenary work, hope, resistance. Sub-factions include Ragnallritter and Ebony Fang. Garnet's route is a common first pick in beginner guide recommendations.

What should I know about Zeilzarde and Alysbelle?

Zeilzarde and Alysbelle anchor the knightly and fae Story lines — opposite tones (aged commander vs hidden village) but the same Leader + monster squad rules.

Zeilzarde — Mysteine

General Zeilzarde commands the Queen's Knights of Mysteine, the queendom founded by legendary hero Lunadea (some JP materials romanize Lunadia) and styled as a continental guardian. Official Story text: he fights to restore peace across Meltitea.

The producer letter adds character detail absent from a stat sheet: Zeilzarde is 46, a middle-aged male lead — rare for the genre — who took a magic attack meant for Queen Mysfaene and carries a curse from that act. Personality notes describe him as awkward but kind, deeply loyal to his troops. That backstory frames Mysteine as duty-bound knights, not a power fantasy teen campaign.

Sub-factions on the map include Noblesse Exaltée and Graudi. Dark-affinity magic shows up in previews for this nation; exact skill lists belong on classes once verified.

Alysbelle — Purifanoe

Alysbelle is a human girl raised in the Fairy Kingdom deep in the Greatwood — Purifanoe's hidden fairy realm. When Neo Abyssloa invades, she flees with fairy companions; official copy promises secrets about her own memory and identity.

Expect pixie/fairy-type allies and exploration-heavy Organization seasons. Reviews warn Purifanoe's pacing can feel slower than Garnet or Largo — fine for second or third campaigns, less ideal as a blind first pick.

What should I know about Saya and TYPE-F?

Saya and TYPE-F headline the eastern warrior isle and the empire's chimera lab — the most distinct tonal pair among the six leads.

Saya Story Mode combat and squad gameplay loop

Saya — Samura Village

Saya is chieftain of Samura Village, a warrior tribe on an eastern island with Japanese-influenced culture. Story hook: she suspects a companion's ties to Neo Abyssloa and investigates betrayal inside the clan.

Character direction: tomboy energy; the Japanese script uses first-person boku, signaling informal, martial leadership rather than courtly speech. She remains a full Leader in hex combat — previews showcase her squad on foot alongside monster allies.

TYPE-F — Pandemyuon

TYPE-F is a weapon manufactured by Pandemyuon, a secret empire lab researching Chimeraization. Official arc: he was built to serve Neo Abyssloa, meets a Sacred Maiden, and turns against his creators.

Thematically the sci-fantasy route — body horror and rebellion instead of mercenary justice or dragon rescue. Pair with factions for Pandemyuon's map neighbors (Gnomonossos, Archacia).

Which other named characters are documented?

Beyond the six protagonists, NIS America's character index and producer letters name additional Leaders and story figures. This wiki lists them as incomplete until each has verified in-game role, faction, and recruit conditions — no invented stats or class levels.

Producer letter coverage

Dedicated producer letters exist for all six protagonists plus Meiha, Jörgoth, and Lori — stronger lore sources than forum guesses. Wise, Laurie, Jadeite, Trisha, and Hayato appear on the character site index but lack full Abyss-specific write-ups on this wiki at launch.

Antagonists (not playable Mission nations)

Chaossolus and the Neo Abyssloa empire drive Story conflict. They are not part of the 24 Mission selectable nations — treat them as campaign opponents, not roster entries. Endgame music and story beats reference Abyssloa legacy; keep them separate from the Meltitea nation list on mission mode.
