How does Rally absorb work on the hex map?

Rally happens during a hex battle, not in Organization. The Leader targets one monster from their squad and absorbs it — the trait applies to the Leader (and sometimes the whole squad), and that monster’s unit token vanishes from the field. You are trading a body for a rule change. That trade is the core of brigandine abyss rally theorycraft.

Rally absorb trait loop — Leader channeling a monster mid-battle
StepWhat happens
1. Choose monsterPick one squad member with a trait you want
2. AbsorbMonster leaves the battlefield
3. Trait activeLeader (and sometimes allies) gain the passive or action bonus
4. FightPlay with fewer tiles occupied but new capabilities
5. Dismiss / swapRelease trait or absorb a different monster if UI allows
6. Re-fieldDismissed monster can return as a unit when rules permit

One absorb slot per Leader flow

Official copy describes absorbing one monster at a time for its trait — not stacking five dragons into one Leader. The decision is which race’s rule you want this map. Wide maps might want Movement +1; long mage duels might want Pixie MP sustain; burst turns might want Lizard extra actions or Demon element shift.

Rally is not recruitment

Organization recruitment and Class Change expand who can deploy. Rally only affects who is currently on the field. A monster on the bench in another stronghold cannot be absorbed. Event battles that let you pull global units still obey the same absorb rules once deployed.

What traits do Dragon, Pixie, Demon, and Lizard give?

NIS America’s official systems page lists three headline Rally traits. Preview and review coverage adds a fourth Lizard-type report that changes action economy. Treat Lizard as preview-grade until your save confirms the text.

DemonAll allies Dark · MD −20% (official)Burst turns vs weak magic defenseEnemy mages punish the MD penalty
LizardExtra Leader action (preview)Second move/attack before enemy reactsLose the Lizard body — fragile Leaders die

Dragon — Movement +1

Official Dragon Rally gives the Leader one extra movement per relevant action window (verify exact UI wording in your build). On hex maps, +1 often means reaching high ground, slipping past an obstacle, or touching the enemy Leader this turn instead of next. Pair with headhunter plans on combat — mobility is how you apply Leader knockout, not a substitute for it.

Pixie — 5% MP per turn

Official Pixie Rally restores 5% MP each turn (confirm whether “turn” means Leader turn or round). Mage and support Leaders who cast every round bleed MP on long defense battles. Pixie absorb keeps spells online without camping on a mana tile — if such tiles exist on the map.

Demon — Dark element shift

Official Demon Rally makes all allies Dark element with Magic Defense −20%. That is a squad-wide offensive setup: Dark skills and gear suddenly align, but every unit is softer to incoming magic. Use for a timed push — KO the enemy Leader before their mage acts — not as a passive stance on a spell-heavy map.

Lizard — extra Leader action (preview)

Hands-on preview coverage reports Lizard-type monsters granting an extra Leader action — effectively letting the Leader move or attack twice in one turn cycle. That is one of the strongest action-economy swings in early coverage. Mark it preview until your trait tooltip matches. When confirmed, it is the trait for “kill this Leader now” turns — absorb, double-action, dismiss if you need the body back.

What do you give up while a monster is absorbed?

The non-negotiable brigandine abyss rally trade-off: you lose the monster on the field while it is absorbed. That monster does not block, bodyguard, capture tiles, or soak counters. Your formation’s front line literally has a hole.

You gainYou lose
Leader trait (move, MP, element, action)One monster token on the map
Simpler action focusHP pool and positioning that monster provided
Trait synergy with gearThat monster’s skills and attacks this turn
Potential Command “feel” of fewer bodiesPhysical choke width — enemies slip through

Formation holes are real

Leaders deploy with a formation (combat). Absorbing your lead tank opens a lane for enemy melee to touch your Leader. Absorbing your only ranged unit may leave you unable to finish a retreating Leader on low ground. Ask: “If this monster disappeared right now, would I still win the race to KO?”

Command Points do not refund on absorb

The absorbed monster still counted toward Organization planning — you did not get Command Points back mid-fight. You are paying the full roster cost for a partial field presence. Cheap monsters can be expendable absorb fodder; promoted dragons are expensive whether they stand on a tile or sit inside the Leader.

Trait vs body math

Movement +1 is often worth one missing foot soldier. 5% MP is worth it when the Leader casts every round. Dark + MD −20% is worth it only when the push ends quickly. Extra action is worth it when the second action is a Leader strike on the enemy Leader — not a cosmetic spell on a grunt.

When should I dismiss or swap a Rally trait?

Official systems copy: you can dismiss an absorb or swap to a different monster’s trait when the fight phase changes. Rally is not a one-way trap — it is a dial. Early turns might need Dragon reach; late cleanup might need the monster back on the field to hold the base gate.

  • Do01Absorb for the trait you need this turn, not the trait you like in the roster menu
  • Do02Dismiss before your Leader duels on −20% MD if you absorbed Demon earlier
  • Do03Swap Pixie → Dragon when the fight shifts from spell duel to chase
  • Do04Swap Dragon → Lizard when you are one tile short of Leader KO
  • Do05Re-field the monster after dismiss if you need a body on the choke
  • Do06Do not swap during enemy kill sequence if animation lock wastes the trait

Dismiss is defensive

If you absorbed Demon for a burst and the enemy Leader survived, dismiss before their mage turn. The −20% Magic Defense is a timer, not a personality. Pixie sustain is less valuable once the Leader is on melee range and MP is no longer the bottleneck.

Swap is offensive

Swap when the map objective changes mid-fight: wide flank opened (Dragon), enemy Leader in kill range (Lizard preview / extra action), or your spells ran dry (Pixie). Swapping costs tempo — you spent a turn changing traits — so pre-plan the absorb line like a combo string.

How do Rally traits fit squad building?

Organization builds the menu Rally can access. Recruit monsters with traits you actually want to absorb — not only raw DPS. A squad of five attackers with no Dragon, Pixie, Demon, or Lizard line means Rally is decorative.

Class Change and trait carriers

Promotions can raise Command cost — the trait carrier might be the expensive dragon you hesitate to absorb. Sometimes the right play is a cheap Lizard or Pixie on a low-cost slot dedicated to Rally, while the promoted dragon stays on the field. Class Change rules: classes. Race roster: monsters.

Protagonist Leaders and story units

Story protagonists have unique skills (characters). Rally traits stack as rules text, not vibes — verify whether a protagonist’s spell benefits from Dark shift or suffers from MD −20%. Do not absorb Demon on a Leader who must tank a boss mage next turn.

Mission Mode victory conditions

Some Mission nations win by collect, defend, or debt timers (mission mode). Rally helps fast Leader KOs and long holds differently: Dragon/Lizard for blitz, Pixie for sustained defense, Demon for timed assassinations. Match trait recruitment to the win type, not only to story flavor.

When should I Rally in a real battle?

Use this decision table at deploy — not after you already lost two monsters chasing bodies. Brigandine abyss rally is strongest when the trait name solves a map problem you can see on the hex grid.

Map signalAbsorbSkip Rally
Enemy Leader one tile out of reachDragon (+1 move) or Lizard (preview action)Demon — you still cannot touch them

Event battle, must KO this turnLizard (preview) or Demon burstPixie slow sustain
Wide open field, no choke pressureOptional — field five bodiesDefault absorb “because it exists”

Three Leaders, three trait menus

Invasions run up to three Leaders (combat). You might absorb Dragon on the flank Leader, keep a full five-monster wall on the defensive Leader, and hold Pixie on the caster Leader in the center. Rally decisions are per Leader, not one trait for the whole army.

Difficulty and hit rates

Higher difficulty mostly changes stats, not AI (tips). Rally does not fix missing gear — +1 move onto a Leader who still whiffs does not retreat the enemy. Organization upgrades first; Rally second.

After the fight

Note which trait actually ended the battle. Update your Organization recruit list — if Dragon absorb never fired because maps were wide, recruit a different trait carrier next season. Squad planner stub (Command math): squad planner.
